• The later partner in the famous watch company Patek Philippe, Jean-Adrien Philippe, is born in Bazoche-Guet (France) as the son of a watchmaker.

• Ferdinand Adolph Lange, the later founder of A. Lange & Söhne, is born on 18 February in Dresden as son of the gunsmith Samuel Lange.

• On 6 October, the Dresden watchmaker Johann Christian Friedrich Gutkaes receives the master craftman's diploma and founds an art watch factory in Dresden, Wilsdruffer Gasse 234.
