- Blancpain introduces the Fifty Fathoms dive watch.
- After many experiments, in 1953 the first special wristwatch for divers is brought to market by Rolex - the "Submariner". Later on this watch becomes one of the best known watches in the world and a true product icon.
- On May 29, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay summit Mt. Everest for the first time, with Hillary wearing a Smiths De Luxe watch. Their Rolex watches were left at the base camp.
- The Bulova employee Max Hetzel begins with the development of a mechanism for stabilizing the accuracy by means of an electrically powered tuning fork, which later leads to the appearance of the model Bulova Accutron.
