• Erhard Junghans, the founder of the traditional German watch manufacturer Junghans, dies on September 9, 1870. Four years before Junghans had started an own watch manufacturing.

• The Englishman Edward Brown becomes the sole owner of the manufacture Breguet.

• Odin Watch Factory is founded in Bienne by the Lassueur family. It would be taken over by Henry Sandoz around the turn of the century, becoming the famous Sandoz brand.

• Busga is founded in La Chaux-de-Fonds
