• On 1 January Johannes Dürrstein founds the company Dürrstein & Comp. in Glashütte, a factory to produce Glashütte precision pocket watches. It will be later renamed to Union.

• The name "Longines" is registered at the International Office for Intellectual Property on 27 March and therefore is the oldest registered watch manufacturer in the world.
