A pointer is a synonym for a hand, but typically indicates use for a complication rather than time-keeping.

Pointers can use any of the traditional hand styles and can be located in a subdial or at the center of the dial.

When a hand indicates a date, day, power reserve, or other functions it is usually referred to as a "pointer" rather than a "hand". Retrograde hands of any function are typically referred to as "pointers" as well, as are indicators on tourbillon or carousel movements.
