The Calatrava, Ref. 5196 is the modern incarnation of the elegant classic men's watch from Patek Philippe.

Ref. 5196 is the member of the modern Calatrava family that closest resembles the classic Ref. 96 Calatrava. It includes the tapered lugs that epitomized the Calatrava, along with the small seconds dial and pointed baton makers. A hand-wound movement, Cal. 215 PS, resides inside the solid case back. This movement is much more modern than the classic, however, with 28,800 A/h performance and a high-tech silicon Spiromax hairspring.

Ref. 5196 was introduced at Baselworld in 2004 and took the place of the classic Ref. 3796 which had been out of production for a few years. It is larger than that reference, with a 37 mm case rather than 31 mm, but still uses the same hand-wound movement.
