• As a further development of the Submariner Rolex presents the Sea-Dweller, which is waterproof up to 610 m (later 1,220 m) and is the first dive watch in the world equipped with a helium valve.

• Girard-Perregaux starts the industrial production of quartz watches. The frequency of 32,768 A/h, applied by Girard-Perregaux, is later adopted as the international standard for quartz watches.

• With the Biostar Certina launches the world's first watch with a display of biorhythms.

• The American Zenith Radio Corporation of Chicago, America's largest group for the manufacture of electronic components, takes over the majority of shares of the watch manufacturer Movado-Zenith-Mondia in June.

• SSIH takes control of Economic Swiss Time Holding.

• ASUAG creates General Watch Co., which includes Certina, Edox, Eterna, Mido, Oris, and Technos. Later that year, Longines is added, including Record and Rotary.

• Solvil et Titus, Invicta, SGT, Girard-Perregaux, Mondaine, and Golana introduce their first quartz watches.
