Ressence Type 1

Type 1 is a revolving dial watch from Belgian watchmaker Ressence produced since 2014.

Overview

Founded by Belgian industrial designer Benoît Mintiens, Ressence released their first watch in 2010. The limited-production Zero Series was equipped with a completely new dial, which, including subdials, moves in a circular motion that is said to be analogous to the motion of time. The Ressence Zero Series movement is powered by the well-known ETA 2824 automatic movement and includes a traditional crown for setting.

The Zero Series was a limited-production proof-of concept watch. It was replaced by the full-production Type 1 in 2014. Although similar to the original Zero Series, the Type 1 has the caseback winding and setting mechanism which first appeared in the Ressence Type 3 a year earlier.

The initial Type 1 (named "Type 1.1" in internal documents) was available in black, champagne, guilloche silver, ruthenium, and white dial versions. The module was named ROCS 1 and was based on the ETA 2824/2. Type 1.2, released soon after, was also available with a rose gold case. A limited-edition for Mr. Porter was also released.

For 2017, Ressence introduced a cushion case version, the "Type 1 Squared" (also styled "Type 1²") at SIHH. The 316L stainless steel case thickness was reduced from 13 mm to 11 mm and it is squared off around the traditional Type 1 dial. Another innovation is a flip-out lever that makes the caseback controls easier to use.

In 2019, Ressence replaced the original Type 1 with a slimmer version dubbed the "Type 1 Slim". It reduced the original 13 mm case thickness to just 11 mm.
