The Braunschweig family was deeply involved in watchmaking, especially in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

The following family came from Hagenthal Le Bas, Haut-Rhin, Grand Est, France and settled in La Chaux-de-Fonds, founding Election and Portescap.

The Brunschwig family came from Haut Rhin, Alsace, France, adopting the Braunschweig spelling there. Some members settled in La Chaux-de-Fonds and founding Braunschweig & Hirsch and Levrette. Isaac Braunschweig was said to be from Besançon when he founded his own firm, I. Braunschweig & Cie. (mistakenly called J. Braunschweig) in La Chaux-de-Fonds. This became simply I. Braunschweig in 1889 before merging with the firm of Emmanuel-Daniel Hirsch as Braunschweig & Hirsch in 1890.
