Adolphe Gutmann

Adolphe Gutmann (1847?-1907) was a Prussian watchmaker in Saint-Imier and La Chaux-de-Fonds around the turn of the century.

Adolphe Gutmann was born in Eberswalde, Prussia, and married a woman named Florine, also from Prussia.

Adolphe Gutmann is listed as a watchmaker in Saint-Imier by 1873 on Rue du Stand. He moved to Grande Rue 17 by 1883 and Rue du Temple 4 by 1898.

Gutmann was keen on producing open heart watches with cut-away dials and exposed balances, patenting such a watch in 1901 and another in 1903. He created an improved model with the balance exposed at 6:00 and registered it in March 1903.

Gutmann registered many brands but it appears that Eloyes was his favorite. Registered in May 1902, the company was renamed Ad. Gutmann, Eloyes Watch Co. when it relocated to La Chaux-de-Fonds in March 1903. The company was located at Rue du Parc 51. Other brands registered by Gutmann include Nike, Sakhaline, and Hercules. The company moved to Rue du Parc 31bis, likely their home, in March of 1906.

Adolphe Gutmann died at the age of 61 in October 1907 in Interlaken. His widow Florine, also from Prussia, took over the company. The company ceased operations and closed in 1915.
